The name ambrosia maple does not apply to a specific species of tree but rather to the striped staining in the wood. The staining is due to a fungus left behind by ambrosia beetles when they burrow through the wood. All of the burrows have been cleaned out and filled with brass inlay leaving a flat surface. The bowl was then finished with 4 coats of food safe finish so the bowl can be used as a serving dish. After use, hand wash in warm soapy water, rinse and dry. The finish is a polyurethane finish that requires no reoiling as with natural oil finishes. Use wood or plastic utensils. Do not use for extended storage. Not microwaveable and not dishwasher safe.
