This vase was turned out of what is referred to as spalted maple. The spalting consists of the black lines and is due to a fungus that gets into the wood as part of the natural decaying process. This process is stopped completely when the wood has been dried which this has been so the vase will not change it’s appearance or it’s shape. The piece has been coated with 4 coats of food safe finish however the finish is not formulated to withstand prolonged exposure to water. If to be used for a living plant, the finish must be protected with either glass or plastic liner to avoid damage.
