This vase is turned from a single piece of what is called black line spalted silver maple. The spalting comes from a fungus that begins the decay process of the wood. The process is halted when the piece is dried as this one has been dried. The vase is coated with 4 coats of tung oil finish. It will need either a glass or plastic liner to protect the piece as the finish is not formulated for extended exposure to water-the vase has been sized for a 1/2 liter plastic water bottle which can be simply removed and thrown out when the flowers have been removed.
