Spalting is an early part of the decaying process after a tree has died. It is seen as discoloration of the wood or as black line running across the surface. This piece has both. Once the wood is dried, the process stops and the wood stays as seen here. At this stage, it does not affect the strength of the wood.

This piece has been coated with four coats of food-safe polyurethane finish so it may be used as a serving bowl or as a display piece. If used for food, cleaning consists of hand washing in warm soapy water, rinse and dry. It is not dishwasher safe and not microwavable. Also, it should not be used for extended food storage .Wooden or plastic utensils should be used. Due to the nature of the finish, the bowl does not need to be reoiled as needed by natural oil finishes.
