The body of this urn is turned out of a single piece of spalted maple. Spalting is the initial stage of the decaying process a tree goes through after it dies. Once the wood is thoroughly dried, there is no more progression of the decay. The black lines and change of color are merely natural staining of the wood and makes this piece totally unique.
This urn was designed primarily as a memorial urn although it certainly can be used as a decorative piece. The body of this piece has been hollowed and has capacity of approximately 175 cubic inches. This provides sufficient space tor the ashes of a person of 175 pounds body weight.
