This bowl is a lovely piece of sycamore. The spalting is from fungus that affected the tree after it was stressed by drought or died. As the wood is now dry, the spalting will not progress so the piece will stay as it is.
The finish used on this piece is food safe so the bowl may be used as a service piece. If so, wooden utensils are recommended. For cleaning, the bowl can be hand washed in warm soapy water, rinsed and dried. The finish does not require any additional finish to be applied as needed by natural oil finish. The bowl is not microwavable nor dish washer safe and should not be used for extended refrigerator storage.
