Both the top and body of each mill were turned out of one piece of wood so they match with the grain. The mills are identified on the top of the adjustment knob as to which is pepper and which is salt. There is a difference in the grinding mechanisms as salt will corrode the steel milling head in the pepper mill so be aware of that when filling the mills. As far as filling is concerned, unscrew the metal knob and slide the wooden top off the shaft. Fill the interior of the mill and reinstall the top and knob. To adjust the mill, tighten the metal knob to the desired degree of grind.
