Spalting is part of the process wood goes through as part of the wood decaying after the tree has died or has been seriously stressed. In this case, the process has been stopped by drying the wood so it will not progress any further. The bowl has been finished with 4 coats of food-safe polyurethane finish so the bowl may be used if you want. The bowl is not microwavable and not dishwasher safe as either will either seriously damage the bowl or destroy it. Also, it should not be used for overnight food storage. Hand washing in warm soapy water is fine followed by rinsing and drying. Wood or plastic serving utensils should be used.
