The term “ambrosia maple” refers to the previous presence of ambrosia beetles that bored through the wood leaving behind a fungus. The fungus stained the wood leaving a green/brown stain which can be seen in the third photo below. Whatever was left behind by the beetles has been cleaned out and the remining holes have been filled with copper inlay.
The vase has been finished with four cots of a tung oil finish resulting in a glossy finish. The coating dried to a hard-shell finish that does not require any supplemental oil to be applied as with natural oil finishes. The finish will not stand up to protracted exposure to water. If water is needed for live flowers, a glass or plastic liner is needed. The mouth of the vase has been sized for a ½ liter water bottle: just cut the top off the bottle, insert it into the vase , fill with water and flowers. Dry up any water that is spilled into the vase. When the flowers are passed their prime, remove the bottle and throw it out.
