The beetle has bored into the wood and left a trail of fungus that leaves a brown /green stain in the wood. The staining does not affect the functionality of the wood but does make each piece with distinctive markings. I do clean out the tunnels to confirm no bug remains are left, then file the tunnels with inlay, in this case copper.
This bowl has been coated with four coats of food safe finish so it may be used as a serving dish. While the finish is durable, it is highly recommended that wooden or plastic utensils be used. The bowl is not dishwasher safe and not microwavable. It also should not be used for extended storage. Clean up consists of hand washing in warm, soapy water, rinse, dry and put it away.
