Spalted maple is simply maple that has been stained by a fungus. The fungus gets into the wood as part of the decaying process of the tree however, when the wood is dried, as has been done here, the fungus dies but the staining remains. The coloring will not change from what you see.
The piece has been finished with 4 coats of a polyurethane, food safe finish so the piece can be used as a serving dish if you wish or as a decorative container for a plant. The finish will not withstand protracted exposure to water so if used for a live plant, the plant’s soil must be contained in a water proof pot and the pot set inside the vessel. If used for a serving dish, it should be hand washed in warm water with mild soap, rinsed, dried and simply put away. It is not dishwasher safe and cannot be microwaved. Do not use it for extended storage either refrigerated or not. It is highly recommended that wooden or plastic serving utensils be used. Note that the finish does not require frequent applications of additional finish as needed by natura oil finishes.
