Spalted maple is not a separate species of maple trees but is called that due to the natural markings in the wood. Spalting is part of the decay process that is caused by a fungus that gets into the tree after it dies and is part of the decaying process for the tree. Once the wood is dried, the fungus dies, the process ceases and the piece will stay as you see it now.
The bowl is coated with four coats of durable food safe polyurethane finish so it can be used as a serving dish. For clean up, simply hand wash in warm soapy water, rinse, dry and put it away. As it is wooden, it is not dishwasher safe nor is it microwavable. Either will destroy the piece. It should not be used for extended storage and use of wooden or plastic utensils is highly recommended. As a final note, it is recommended that the bowl not be used for tomato sauces or other tomato dishes as it may permanently stain the finish.
